Rose gold has an old problem: the copper that gives it its colour leaches out over decades, and the metal fades toward yellow. Rolex's answer, patented in 2005, was to add a trace of platinum. The chemistry, briefly
18ct rose gold is 75% gold with the balance mostly copper and a little silver. Copper is what makes it pink, and copper is also chemically active — it oxidises and, in some alloys, migrates.
Everose is 76% gold, about 2% platinum and the remainder copper. The platinum stabilises the copper in the alloy structure, and the colour stays put.
Rolex casts its own
Rolex operates its own foundry at its Plan-les-Ouates site and casts every gram of gold it uses — yellow, white and Everose. It is one of the very few watchmakers that does.
That is what makes Everose possible as a proprietary alloy: Rolex controls the composition from raw metal to finished case, and no supplier can replicate it.
What it looks like
Everose is a warmer, deeper pink than most rose gold and noticeably less orange. Against a black or chocolate dial it is spectacular; against a white dial it can look almost coppery.
It is also easier to wear than yellow gold for a lot of people. It reads as warm rather than as gold, which makes it a more forgiving everyday precious metal.
The models that use it
The Day-Date 40 (228235) in solid Everose on a President bracelet is the flagship. The Yacht-Master 116655 in Everose with a black Cerachrom bezel and an Oysterflex bracelet is the most modern-looking Rolex there is. The GMT-Master II 126711CHNR "Root Beer" in Everose Rolesor is the most sought-after two-tone Rolex of recent years.
And across the Datejust range, Everose Rolesor (references ending in 1) has become the default alternative to yellow two-tone.
Everose Rolesor vs solid Everose
Rolesor gives you an Everose bezel, crown and bracelet centre links on a steel case and bracelet. Solid Everose is gold throughout, and both the price and the weight reflect it.
For most buyers Rolesor is the better proposition: you get the colour, the warmth and the gold content where it shows, at a fraction of the cost.
Caring for it
Everose does not need replating, unlike white gold, which is usually rhodium-plated and dulls over years. Wash it with warm water and a soft brush; avoid abrasive cloths, which will polish the finish unevenly.
It marks like any gold. Gold is soft, and that is not a defect.
